Songs of the Week

  • Marching Bands of Manhattan-Death Cab for Cutie
  • Wolf & I-Oh Land
  • Call me Maybe-Carly Rae Jepsen. This is supposed to be the “song of summer”. It is made so by having completely vapid, superficial lyrics, a music video that features a bunch of Disney channel rejects that are wearing wool hats and multiple layers even though its the middle of summer, and a hook that is scientifically designed to stay in your head FOREVER! So its neat to see how many people are covering it. Here are some other versions done by other vastly more talented individuals.

Call me Maybe-Fun. Nate Ruess is reading the lyrics as he sings and still sounds more substantial somehow.

Call me Maybe-Ben Howard. He laughs through the whole thing which is awesome. Plus, this version replaces keyboard chello with actual chello! (Also, this is the best version)

Yah…there is a building in down town Manhattan with no windows for 40 stories, high fenced court yards, and 24 hour security. When we circled the building we found other people with the same confused look, staring up into the sky. They said they went into the lobby and just asked what the building was. They were told it was a “communications equipment storage facility”…..sooooo yah, that’s a lie….
I was almost scared to take this sweet picture

Aaron Sorkin's Commencement Speech - 13 May

Aaron Sorkin is one of my heros. These are some of the best parts of this 15 minute speech.

“And make no mistake about it, you are dumb. You’re a group of incredibly well-educated dumb people. I was there. We all were there. You’re barely functional. There are some screw-ups headed your way. I wish I could tell you that there was a trick to avoiding the screw-ups, but the screw-ups, they’re a-coming for ya. It’s a combination of life being unpredictable, and you being super dumb.”

“Today is May 13th, and today you graduate, and today you already know what I know: to get where you’re going, you have to be good, and to be good where you’re going, you have to be damned good. Every once in a while, you’ll succeed. Most of the time you’ll fail, and most of the time the circumstances will be well beyond your control.”

“Develop your own compass, and trust it. Take risks, dare to fail, remember the first person through the wall always gets hurt.”

“Today is May 13th and today you graduate and the rules are about to change, and one of them is this: Decisions are made by those who show up. Don’t ever forget that you’re a citizen of this world. Don’t ever forget that you’re a citizen of this world, and there are things you can do to lift the human spirit, things that are easy, things that are free, things that you can do every day. Civility, respect, kindness, character. You’re too good for schadenfreude, you’re too good for gossip and snark, you’re too good for intolerance”

“Don’t ever forget that a small group of thoughtful people can change the world. It’s the only thing that ever has.”

“Rehearsal’s over. You’re going out there now, you’re going to do this thing. How you live matters. You’re going to fall down, but the world doesn’t care how many times you fall down, as long as it’s one fewer than the number of times you get back up.”

Days of Future Past

I usual forget that its my birthday. I can remember several times in the past that I was completely oblivious to the fact that it was the day of my birthday until one of my best friends or my wife reminded me of it. Is that weird?

There is something about being older than a quarter century that seems really old to me. That’s an exact thought I had a few days ago…funny. At the same time I am calmed by the fact that I am still technically in my “Mid” twenties. Next year, Ill be in my “late” twenties, but Ill cross that bridge when it comes. Should I do something to mark the occasion like cut my hair or get a tattoo?

One year older and one year wiser. I am not sure about all that, but I definitely KNOW a lot more things. So that has got to be worth something. I know how to tie a double becket bend. I know the RBM’s avarage RPM’s at 46 knots. I know how long an avarage human can live after their heart has stopped. I know that at 25 yards I am a sharpshooter with the pistol, shotgun, and rife, and at 3 yards I’m Buffalo Bill, even with my left hand.

I could not really spend time thinking about all the implications of my age because I was working. We had to set up a security zone for the President. I cant go into detail about all of it because you don’t have a secret clearance (seriously), but it was one of those moments that affirmed some of the choices I have made till this point. Last year at this time I was waiting tables and struggling to pay bills. This year, I am living in New York and protecting the President. Someone once told me that you have to judge your success by what you had to give up to get it. And getting here has not been easy, so I will take my victories where I find them.

I am glad I am doing something of meaning now. Well, of more meaning. My birthday gets me thinking about the next year as well as the last, and  I think I am going to try to move to the West Coast after New York. Learning to surf is defiantly on the bucket list…and buying a motorcycle. So who knows, now that I am in pretty good shape, surfing and crusing around San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego might just feel like home.

I am now officialy on the MST “A” school list. I had to help pick up a few MST’s off the side of a cruise ship a couple of weeks ago, and I think that sealed the deal for me. MST stands for Marine Science Technician. This is the official description of a MST, “MST’s conduct marine-safety activities such as investigating pollution incidents, monitoring pollution cleanups, conducting foreign-vessel boardings to enforce pollution and navigation safety laws, conducting harbor patrols for port safety and security, inspecting waterfront facilities and supervising the loading of explosives on vessels.” So, that’s pretty cool! They deal with CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) threats as well! You are basically a federal law enforcement agent AND a scientist! The dichotomy speaks to me.

To join this rate you have to basically have the highest ASVAB scores…which I do. I laughed when I found out what I got on my ASVAB a year ago. I didnt even tell anyone. Its just too ridiculous, and at the time it symbolized my life. On paper it seemed I was going places and had it all figured out, in real life I didn’t have a clue. I laughed by myself at the absurdity of it. I guess not a whole lot has changed.

Plus if I decide to get out of the Coast Guard I can become a Park Ranger or Game Warden or…something. I am still not sure what I want to be when I grow up. But being a ranger and tracking animals and criminals through the wilderness sounds like something that God wants me to do, but once again…who knows…

The world is supposed to end on the 21st of December anyway…so there might not even be another year for anyone. It hurts my brain how simple and complicated things are all at once.

Bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes

Noctiluca scintillans doing what it does best in the Gippsland Lakes, a small chain of inland lakes in Victoria, Australia.

The events that transpired to make this happen are quite miraculous; firstly there was widespread fires in Victoria that burned pretty intensely for quite some time. Then, they were followed by intense flooding that inundated many areas of Gippsland amongst others. The basic effect was that floodwaters carried nutrient-rich soil and ash from the higher reaches into the Gippsland basin, leading to a eutrophic condition in which algae and bacteria can thrive.

This gave rise to a particularly prolific cyanobacteria getting a foothold, Synechococcus. Essentiallysmothering the lake in cellular life, it gave an opportunity for some pretty special creatures to breed prolifically given an abundant food source - Noctiluca scintillans, a bioluminescent Dinoflagellate.

And so, you end up with photographs like this. A once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, captured for all to share.

Where the Wild Things Were

I love movies. I think that if you and another person love the same movie (or any piece of art) that means there is a part of of that person that you also love. Very much in the same way that two lovers can feel connected looking up at the same moon while they stand thousand of miles apart. Here is a list of all the movies I remember crying in.

1. Where the Wild Things Are

…That is all

Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, died May 8th. Most of the time when the news is about “celebrities” I scoff and dismiss it. But really, stories like that aren’t about individuals, the celebrities themselves, they are about US. They are an accurate picture of the common direction we all face. A mythology we all share. Sendak wrote a short book that for some reason or another stuck with many of us since we were kids, and Spike Jonze made a movie about it that reminded me of a lost childhood. So when the news of his death spread it just made me a little sad…a man I never met who shared a piece of himself with the rest of us.

“I have nothing now but praise for my life. I’m not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can’t stop them. They leave me and I love them more. … What I dread is the isolation. … There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.” —Maurice Sendak on Fresh Air in 2011
